Students Win Case for Equality in Education

Los Angeles, CA–Students throughout California received a win today for greater equality in education as Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Rolf Treu ruled certain teacher employment rules unconstitutional.

The lawsuit was brought by Students Matter and challenged, in part, the eligibility of tenure for teachers, as well as the rules for firing them. It noted how these rules disproportionately affect students in low-income areas.

“Unless parents have the means to send their child to a private school—or home school them—all too often they are forced to deal with teachers who are unsatisfactory in their performance,” said Brad Dacus, President of Pacific Justice Institute. “This ruling empowers parents to now be able to speak up for their children when they have a teacher that should be fired and should not be teaching.”

The California Teachers Association opposed this ruling, claiming that it strips “teachers of their professional rights” and hurts students. They have promised to appeal the decision.
