Proposition 8 Wins While Battle Looms in Public Schools and Courts
Sacramento, CA – With nearly all the votes counted, California voters passed Proposition 8. The proposition amends the California Constitution so that “[o]nly a marriage between a man and woman is valid and recognized in California.” Nonetheless, both sides in the matter know that the struggle over the defense of the traditional family is far from over. “There will most assuredly be an attempt to prevent the enforcement of Proposition 8 by opponents of traditional marriage,” said attorney Karen Milam from PJI’s southern California office. “We intend to play an active role in any such attempts to once again skirt the voice of California’s voters.”
Pro-family forces are also already working on preparing another initiative that will give parents greater rights in protecting their children from controversial instruction relating to sex, sexual orientation and gender identity. “The passage of Prop. 8 is simply the first battle in protecting the rights of parents who do not wish to have their children indoctrinated to accept life-styles that violate their convictions or faith,” said Brad Dacus, president of Pacific Justice Institute. “We at PJI will be working hard with others to make sure such parental rights protections are achieved for every family in California,” he further stated.
